Carolina Performing Arts Pop-Up Calendar Design

The inventive pop-up calendar that our talented team here at Rivers Agency created for Carolina Performing Arts’ 2014/15 season just won a prestigious PICA Award! We beat out more than 200 other projects to win this honor in the annual contest sponsored by the Printing Industry of the Carolinas.

The inspiration for our winning design came from the wondrous La Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona. Our president, Lauren Rivers, toured this majestic structure during a recent trip to Spain and was blown away by its imaginative architecture, which blends Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms to create a series of awe-inspiring spires of varying heights.

Our creative marketing team took this idea of staggered shapes and forms and applied it to the design of the 2014/15 Carolina Performing Arts calendar. Designed to fold flat in the shape of a traditional brochure, the booklet accordions out to reveal a series of dramatically shaped geometric panels of varying sizes, one for each month, that spotlight all of the season’s events on the CPA schedule as well as individual performers of note. Once unfolded, the calendar can be positioned to stand upright on a desk like a sculpture.

At the Rivers Agency office we are so inspired by the world-class performances hosted by Carolina Performing Arts. As work on each season begins we’re always excited to try and bring out the “wow factor” with new exciting ideas that help bring the performances to life in the marketing materials. We love going to and are proud sponsors of the concerts at Memorial Hall. It’s truly an honor to work with the talented team at Carolina Performing Arts.

Since 1966, the PICA Awards have been the premier symbol of excellence for the graphics industry in the Carolinas. This year’s awards will be presented April 18 at the 49th annual PICA Awards banquet being held at the Embassy Suites Golf Resort & Spa in Concord, N.C. We can’t wait to join our peers and celebrate our big win!
